DOT Issues Final Rule on Transportation of Fire Extinguishers

The United States Department of Transportation, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration (PHMSA) has issued a final rule regarding Docket No. PHMSA-2009-0126 (HM-215K); RIN 2137-AE83. This final rule has a major impact on the transportation of fire extinguishers. NAFEDs federal regulations committee has reviewed this final rule and will submit a more detailed report in the near future. Read the key takeaways and recommendations on NAFED's website.

NAFED is providing training to help members get a leg up on these changes. A DOT Train-the-Trainer Seminar is being offered in Austin, Texas, on March 1, 2013. In addition, a four-hour pre-conference seminar is scheduled for all three of NAFEDs 2013 conferences. For more information and to register for any of these seminars please visit the event calendar.

NFPA Standards, 2013 Editions

The NFPA announced that 44 revised standards will be issued as 2013 editions with an effective date of December 2012. The revised standards that have the greatest impact for NAFED members include:
  • NFPA 10, Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers
  • NFPA 14, Standard for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems
  • NFPA 17, Standard for Dry Chemical Extinguishing Systems
  • NFPA 17A, Standard for Wet Chemical Extinguishing Systems
  • NFPA 1962, Standard on Care, Use, Inspection, Service Testing, and Replacement of Fire Hose, Couplings, Nozzles and Fire Hose Appliances
In the future we will provide a report on the major changes in these standards plus we will also be discussing them at NAFEDs 2013 Conferences.

SBA Launches Affordable Care Act Web Page

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) launched a new web page and blog dedicated to educating small business owners about the Affordable Care Act. SBAs new web page breaks down the key provisions of the Act based on business size in the following categories: self-employed, fewer than 25 employees, fewer than 50 employees and more than 50 employees.

The web page also provides links to other useful information for small businesses, including a glossary of key health care reform terms, an interactive timeline with dates for when certain reforms will be implemented, a state-by-state breakdown of health care options, and how to learn more about specific tax provisions and regulations. Additional resources will be added as they become available.
