DOT Updates

Medical Cards
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) published a final rule extending the requirement for interstate commercial drivers to have paper copies of their medical examiners certifications with them when operating a commercial motor vehicle. This requirement will stay in effect until January 30, 2015. Drivers were still required to certify their status (e.g., interstate or intrastate, exempt or non-exempt) with the State Driver License Agency (SDLA) agency before January 30, 2014 and to provide the SDLA a copy of any new medical certificate received after January 30, 2012.

In 2013 the Hours of Service (HOS) Regulations were finally issued, covering the maximum driving, working, off-duty, and rest requirements for commercial motor vehicle operators. Part of these regulations included a mandatory 30-minute rest break under certain conditions, though not required for short haul drivers. Please review the rules to see how they apply to your drivers.

Railroad Crossings
A new rule was issued jointly by the FMCSA and PHMSA (Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration) to prevent commercial motor vehicles from stopping on railroad crossings. The new rule prohibits a commercial motor vehicle from entering a railroad crossing unless the vehicle can completely drive across without stopping. This rule applies to all commercial motor vehicles involved in interstate commerce and all vehicles transporting placardable amounts of hazardous materials.

In Memorium: Ron Steel

Ron Steel, founder of longtime NAFED member Steel Fire Equipment in Mississauga, Ontario, passed away on January 24, 2014. Ron started Steel Fire Equipment in 1958 with a few hundred dollars. The company began as a service business, filling extinguishers from the trunk of a '53 Ford, and expanded into replacement parts and part manufacturing. The service side of the business was eventually sold, and the company still continues parts and chemical manufacturing and wholesaling to this day. Ron was a true entrepreneur and a leader in the industry. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Marie, sister Carol, and his son Jason, who now runs Steel Fire Equipment.

Ansul Bulletin

Ansul announced that the use of parts and services that aren't in compliance with product manuals, including the use of non-authorized third party components, will void their system's warranty. An audit program is being put in place to ensure compliance; violations can lead to the termination of a distributor contract.
