House Bill Would Extend TWIC Card Expiration

On March 15, 2011, State Representative Bennie G. Thompson (Mississippi) introduced a bill to extend the expiration date on current TWIC (Transportation Worker Identity Credential) cards. As overviewed in the October 2010 Fire Wire, TWICs are required of personnel who need unescorted access on secured maritime vessels and facilities. HR 1105 was introduced, in the words of the bill, "To ensure that Transportation Worker Identification Credentials held by certain maritime workers do not expire before the deadline for full implementation of electronic readers for such credentials or December 31, 2014, whichever is earlier."

Update to NFPA's Antifreeze in Sprinklers Alert

The NFPA's Standards Council has issued four Tentative Interim Amendments (TIAs) that address the use of antifreeze in fire sprinkler systems. The TIAs provide new requirements in NFPA standards for the use of antifreeze in both new and existing sprinkler systems. NFPA has also issued a new safety alert regarding the use of antifreeze in sprinkler systems. These actions come after extensive research and standards development activities to address concerns raised by the combustibility of antifreeze solutions in sprinkler systems.

The four new TIAs apply to:

  • NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems (2010 edition)
  • NFPA 13R, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in Residential Occupancies up to and Including Four Stories in Height (2010 edition)
  • NFPA 13D, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in One- and Two-Family Dwellings and Manufactured Homes (2010 edition)
  • NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems (2011 edition)

The previous TIAs and Safety Alert issued by NFPA in August 2010 are no longer in effect. The entire NFPA Safety Alert and more information can be found at www.nfpa.org/antifreeze.
