FAA Revises Handheld Rule

The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) finally published the AC 20-42D draft updating the current AC 20-42C, Hand Fire Extinguishers for Use in Aircraft. They are opening comments on this draft until November 27, 2009. The revised AC (Advisory Circular) will provide guidance on the effectiveness and safe use of Halon 1211 and three FAA-approved replacement agents. Contaminated Halon Alert

The CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) and EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) have circulated bulletins regarding contaminated Halon 1211 and Halon 1301 that has entered the supply chain. A suspect bulk batch of Halon was possibly supplied to four UK companies: AVIA Technique Ltd, Pacific Scientific, Fire Fighting Enterprises Ltd, and MEL Aviation Ltd. The suspected Halon is being tracked down and tested. If you have concerns, contact your Halon supplier, or if you have further questions about the actions being taken in the UK, contact the CAA at requirements@caa.co.uk.

Testing Interval Update to NFPA 3

As reported by Security System News, the 2011 edition of NFPA 3, Standard for the Commissioning and Integrated Testing of Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems, will include a requirement for integrated testing of fire and security systems to be performed at intervals not to exceed five years. The proposal period for this edition is closed, but the comment on proposals period will be open until March 5, 2010. You can review the proposed draft on the NFPA website.
